The soul of photography is "light"

A firm understanding of color temperayure can help you create a compelling color palette. That accentuates the mood of film.

What is Color Temperature

In short, color temperature is used to the describe the color of the light source.

Color temperature is a physical quantity used to define the color of a light source in lighting optics. Color temperature is a method of measuring temperature. Imagine an absolute black body. After being heated from absolute zero, it will emit light of different colors when heated to different temperatures, and its objects will appear in different colors. First from black to red, then to yellow, then to white, and finally to blue. We describe the color temperature of the light source by the absolute temperature of the complete radiator that is equal to or similar to the color temperature of the light source. The simple understanding is that the color of the light displayed at different temperatures is expressed by the absolute temperature K. For example, when a black body receives a heat of 3000k (Kelvin temperature), it will turn yellow, and the light source of the emitted yellow light is defined as 3000k.

Often people perceive reds, oranges and yellows as warmer and whites and blues as cooler, when in fact red has the lowest color temperature, and then gradually increases to orange, yellow, white and blue, with blue being the highest color temperature. When shooting with natural light, since the color temperature of the light in different time periods is different, the color of the photos taken is also different.

light with different color temperatures

Lights with different color temperatures will show different colors, and will also cause different emotional reactions. We can simply divide the light into three types, one is warm light, the other is cool light, and the middle warm white light. , which is a term we often use in photography.

1.warm light

The color temperature of warm light is below 3300k. At this time, there are more red and orange light in the light, which will give people a warm, comfortable and lazy feeling. Therefore, it is also called warm light, and the captured picture is called warm color.

2、warm white light

The color temperature of warm white is between 3300k and 5300k. At this time, the light is pure and bright, which will give people a pleasant and positive feeling.

3、cool light

The color temperature of cool light is above 5300k. At this time, there is more blue light in the light, which will give people a cool and quiet feeling, so it is also called cool light, and the picture taken is called cool color.

What are some creative ways cinematographers use color temperature?

In film and photography, knowing the color temperature of various light sources. Will allow you to master whatever look you’re going for.

In film, photography, and painting, warm and cold tones are often used to enhance contrast and highlight emotions. Photographers should set different color temperature values according to different themes.

Warm colors tend to show a nostalgic, warm, and life-like atmosphere. Such as warm scenes, food photography, etc.

Cool tones: Most of the films with a calm, rational, dark, and melancholic tone are treated as cool tones. And some that need to be more brutal will be paired with a strong contrasting blood red. For example, scenes that express a horror atmosphere, express loneliness, and a sense of emptiness.

Understanding the relationship between light and color temperature can help photographers shoot in different light, pre-calculate what tone will be taken in the photo, and further consider whether to intensify or reduce this tone, in practice. Which of the camera’s functions should be used to intensify or soften this tone when shooting. Only by fully understanding the color temperature can you achieve better results in your photography.
